Synopsis

Cha Yu-ri was a young woman who was living happily with her husband Cho Gang-hwa. However, an unexpected incident happened and she died while 9 months pregnant with her daughter, Cho Seo-woo. Her husband was left to raise their daughter alone. Despite her passing, Yu-ri couldn’t bear to leave her little girl behind and chose to stay on Earth as a spirit to watch over her.

For five long years, Yu-ri observed Seo-woo growing as a ghost by living with them. One day, she discovered that Seo-woo could see her, and this revelation shook her to her core. She knew that her daughter’s ability to see ghosts will put her in danger. Yu-ri was very worried and felt like she had to find a way to keep her daughter safe. She cried a lot because she felt very sad and helpless. Her tears fell like rain, and the skies darkened with grief and it started to rain harder. Then, something miraculous happened. Yu-ri felt a strange sensation on her skin, and the snow on her shoulder melted away.

It was then Yu-ri realised that she had become human again. With the help of a reincarnation project, Yu-ri was given 49 days to live as a human once more. Moreover, she was granted a second chance in life, but it came with a daunting task. She must reclaim her rightful place as her husband’s wife and her daughter’s mother. Success would mean that she could remain alive and be with her family. However, it seemed like an impossible task, especially since her husband had remarried another woman by that time.

Ending Explained

Yu-ri tells Gang-hwa that she must leave after she completes her 49 days. She explains that if she stays, her daughter Seo-woo will continue to see ghosts for the rest of her life. Gang-hwa is shocked by this revelation, and he also learns that Yu-ri is reluctant to return to her original place as his wife. Gang-hwa’s second wife, Min-jung, has ended things with him.

Yu-ri creates a to-do list of promises and things she wants to do before she leaves. She takes the remaining ghosts out to dinner and then goes on a camping trip with her family. During the trip, she realizes that it would not have worked out between Gang-hwa and Min-jung, so she couldn’t blame herself for their failed relationship.

Min-jung writes a letter to Yu-ri to say goodbye and promises to take care of Seo-woo. The next morning, Yu-ri says goodbye to Seo-woo and leaves.

Theme

‘Hi Bye, Mama!’ portrays the enduring power of love, and the pain of loss by depicting the profound connections that exist within families and between couples. Through the characters of Yu-ri and Gang-hwa, the show explores the intense emotions that come with losing a loved one, and the ways in which love can endure even beyond death.
