Overview of Family By Choice

‘Family By Chance’ is a South Korean JTBC drama starring Hwang In-youp, Jung Chae-yeon, and Bae Hyun-sung in lead roles. Originally, the drama is inspired by the Chinese series ‘Go Ahead’.

The South Korean television series, ‘Family By Chance’ was directed by Kim Seung-ho based on the script written by Hong Si-young. It was released on 9 October 2024 and streamed its final episode on 7 November 2024.

Synopsis

Yoon Ju-won is the only daughter of her single father. She lost her mother at a very young age, and her father takes good care of her. When she was a child, she desperately wishes to get an elder brother. One day, when Ju-won is walking with her father, they see a family moving their house to their neighbourhood. Ju-won becomes excited to see a boy in the family, and they soon become close.

Kim San-ha moved to Ju-won’s neighbourhood with his parents. His mother is angry with him after the death of his younger sister in an accident. She thinks that her daughter would have been still alive if San-ha had helped her. She has been depending on alcohol since the day after her daughter’s death. Also, she gets irritated every time she sees San-ha happily playing with Ju-won. One day San-ha’s mother abandons him, and later he and his father start to live with Ju-won’s family.

Later causing displeasure for Ju-won, her father accommodates Kang Hae-jun, the son of a lady with whom he had gone for a blind date. Nonetheless, Ju-won’s disgust did not last, and slowly, they started to become like siblings.

San-ha and Hae-jun become popular students in their high school, making other girls approach Ju-won with the gift for her brothers. Since Ju-won and her brothers are not blood-related, the girls always doubt Ju-won for secretly loving her brothers when they do not get any reply from Hae-jun and San-ha.

Disturbing the smooth flow of their family, the parents of Hae-jun and San-ha start to reappear in their lives. In Hae-jun’s case, he was secretly waiting for his mother to come back and see him. Despite his wish, his mother comes back to pay the debt to Jo-won’s father and goes without waiting to see him. However, his biological father comes forward claiming him to make him his heir. His biological father marries a woman from a wealthy family but does not have children.

On the flip side, San-ha’s mother remarried, and she has a daughter in her new family. Though she still blames San-ho for the death of her first daughter, she demands San-ha to live with his new family.

One day, Hae-jun and San-ha get into a fight arguing about their mothers. Deep down they miss their family.

Though San-ha treats Ju-won as a sister, he starts to have feelings for her. He is scared of expressing his feelings and starts to keep a distance from her. After high school, Hae-jun and San-ha decide to pursue higher education in different places. Ju-won, who is unhappy about their departure, sends them for their studies on the condition of keeping updated about each other’s lives.

Ju-won celebrates her first birthday after the departure of her brothers with her father and uncle (San-ha’s father, who is living happily with them after his wife left him). Whereas Hae-jun and San-ha join the celebration through video calls. They join her birthday celebration through video calls for a few more years and later start messaging her on her birthday.

Ju-won starts to feel a lack of intimacy between them. Ten years later she starts a bakery, and it spikes to popularity in no time. Park Dal, Ju-won’s childhood friend, has become her only friend with whom she shares her inner thoughts and feelings. Ju-won knows about Park Dal’s love interest in her brother Hae-jun and has been a great support to pursue her love during her school days.

Now, Park Dal works as a prominent lawyer, but still her mother controls the majority of her life.

One day, a trespasser sneaks into Ju-won’s bakery. When Ju-won comes to her bakery, she finds the door open and recognises the presence of a stranger inside. Gathering up all her courage, she steps inside and confronts the intruder. Later, they end up in the police station. Learning the news, her father and uncle (San-ha’s father, who is also a police officer) reach the police station and scold the intruder for attacking their daughter. It is after a scuffle that the intruder shows his face.

Surprising everyone, the stranger is revealed as Hae-jun. Without much delay, San-ha also reunites with his chosen family.

Hae-jun and San-ha have come back, deciding that they will live the rest of their lives together with their chosen family. In the past ten years, a lot of things happened in their lives. Hae-jun was not able to complete his college education and quit basketball due to a bad leg injury. Currently, he is just out of the military after completing his military service.

San-ha, on the flip side, made a good career out of his education. He is now a doctor and has been living with his mother and half-sister during his college days.

Even after the reunion of her family, Ju-won feels an emotional distance from her brothers. She is disappointed in losing the communication with them. The family decides to gather and regain their bond on Ju-won’s 27th birthday.

Nonetheless, Ju-won was least excited about her birthday celebration. She behaves like a person who considers singing a birthday song too childish.

San-ha’s feelings for Ju-won grow stronger, and he decides to confess his love. At first, Ju-won feels weird about thinking of San-ha as his lover. However, she starts to feel a new sensation whenever she sees Sah-ha. One day, they become involved in a romantic kiss and realise their mutual love interest.

Hae-jun was planning to buy Ju-won’s father a building, and when it comes to the legal side, Hea-jun needs to prove the relationship with Ju-won’s father to buy the property for him. Therefore, he starts to think of the ways that he can show his relationship with Ju-won’s father. At the end of thinking for a long time, Hea-jun decides to become the son-in-law of Ju-won’s father. While everyone is eating together, Hae-jun asks Ju-won to marry him. Later, Hae-jun himself dropped the thought since he cannot imagine Ju-won as his girlfriend or wife.

On the other hand, San-ha and Ju-won decide to take the next step in their life. San-ha discusses the matter with Ju-won’s father, and after a series of discussions, he approves of their relationship.
