Biography of Chanyeol

Park Chanyeol, widely known by his stage name Chanyeol, is a South Korean rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, actor and model. He is a member of the popular South Korean-Chinese boy groups Exo, Exo-K and Exo-SC. Apart from being an active member of the groups, Chanyeol has starred in several television dramas and movies like ‘So I Married an Anti-fan’ (2016) and ‘Secret Queen Markers’ (2018).

Early Life and Education

Park Chanyeol was born on 27 November 1992 in Seoul, South Korea. He completed his schooling from Hyundai High School in Apgujeong-dong, Seoul. Chanyeol has an elder sister Park Yoo-ra, a former announcer at South Korean Broadcast stations YTN and MBC. At the age of sixteen, he was admitted to a private acting institution where he associated himself with Block B’s P.O.

Chanyeol attended Kyung Hee Cyber University along with online classes for the Culture and Arts Department of Business Administration. Chanyeol also took graduate studies at Inha University for interior design.

Career

Park Chanyeol’s inspiration to pursue a music career was from watching ‘School of Rock’ and began playing the drums. Chanyeol decided to be a singer after listening to ‘Unconditional Kismet’ by Yoo Young-jin. He was a great fan of rock bands and his biggest influencers were Jason Mraz and Eminen. In 2008, he won second place in the Smart Model Contest and became a trainee under SM Entertainment. While at the agency, he changed his focus to rap. He made cameo appearances in TVXQ’s ‘HaHaHa Song’ music video as well as Girls’ Generation’s ‘Genie’ music video.

On 23 February 2012, SM Entertainment officially announced him to be the last Exo member. He has a baritone singing voice. The group made their first debut with the extended play ‘Mama’. Chanyeol made a guest appearance on the debut single ‘Twinkle’ by Girls’ Generation-TTS. He was a cast member of the SBS reality TV show ‘Law of the Jungle’ in 2013. After rejoining the show in 2015, he composed and recorded an original soundtrack, ‘Last Hunter’.

For Exo’s second EP ‘Overdose’, Chanyeol wrote the part for the Korean version of the track in 2014. He appeared on label-mates Henry’s second EP and Zhou Mi’s debut EP. He was selected as the regular cast member for the first season of ‘Roommate’, the SBS reality TV show in 2014. Due to schedule conflicts, he left the show in September 2014. He made his big screen debut as a supporting actor in the South Korean film ‘Salut d’Amour’, starring Park Geun-hyung and Youn Yuh-jung in 2015.

He starred as the male lead in the web drama ‘Exo Next Door’ along with actress Moon Ga-young. He and Chen and Lay co-wrote the Korean version of the track ‘Promise’ from ‘Love Me Right’. For Exo’s promotional single, he wrote the rap for ‘Lightsaber’ which was included in the third EP ‘Sing for You’.

For Yesung’s debut extended play, Chanyeol wrote and performed the rap song ‘Confession’ in 2016. In 2017, Chanyeol co-wrote the lyrics for Exo’s third studio album titled ‘Heaven’. Along with Yuan Shanshan and Jiang Chao, Chanyeol starred in the Chinese romantic comedy film ‘So I Married an Anti-Fan’. He starred as Hou Zhun and the movie was released on 30 June 2016.

Apart from acting, he recorded a duet titled ‘I Hate You’ as the theme song for the movie. Chanyeol was featured in the American hip-hop group Far East Movement as well as in Marshmello’s song ‘Freal Luv’. For the tvN’s drama ‘Guardian: The Lonely and Great God’, Chanyeol and the South Korean singer Punch collaborated on an original soundtrack titled ‘Stay With Me’. He played the supporting role in MBC’s drama ‘Missing 9’ in 2017 and in 2018 in tvN’s drama ‘Memories of the Alhambra’.

In 2017, with the Korea Music Copyright Association, Park Chanyeol was the one who registered himself with the pen name ‘LOEY’. Chanyeol and the South Korean singer, Junggigo collaborated on a duet titled ‘Let Me Love You’. On 14 September 2018, Chanyeol collaborated with Sehun on the single ‘We Young’. Through SM Station, he released his first solo song ‘SSFW’ on 15 April 2019. He was a member of the second official sub-unit Exo-SC and they released their first EP ‘What a Life’ on 22 July 2019. In 2021, he appeared in the musical road film ‘The Box’, a Jukebox musical of popular songs by international artists like Coldplay, Billie Eilish, and Pharrell Williams.

Park Chanyeol enrolled into the military on 29 March 2021 as an active-duty soldier and was discharged on 8 September 2022.
